29/06/17

Aims:

  • Choose billboards which inspire me
Reflections:

I used an emaze photo album to look at billboards with layouts, images, and color schemes which appealed to me. The problem with this was that I could not find images of billboards for wedding magazines. Instead, I chose wedding related magazines and fashion magazines. These will still serve as inspiration for my product and I will have to apply my own understanding of wedding magazines that I have built up over my research and planning so that I can personalize them and make them more suited to my magazine.

Product Inspirations: Billboard Inspirations

These are the billboards which inspire me. There are not any bridal magazine billboards available on Google Images so I looked at bridal businesses and fashion magazine billboards. These were the closest I could get to a bridal magazine billboard.
These billboards inspire me because they make good use of images. Most have one image taking up the entirety of the billboard and this makes the page look more full. Others have whitespace and this makes the text easier to read. Only one of the inspirations does not use images.
My inspirations also all use simple layouts with effective fonts. This is definitely something I can take inspiration from.

T.A Research: Moodboard

Click here to see original [x]

This is a simple moodboard that shows off my target audience. If you click through the link provided above, there are gifs that will not work in the screenshot taken above. This moodboard helps me to see the different aspects of my target audience (engaged, female, 26-30, employed, rich) as a whole rather than as individual traits and also allows me to create a visual aid to refer back to. It also helps me to look at what aesthetics fit my T.A and how I can appeal to them visually, supporting my research and giving me inspiration.

28/06/17

Aims:

  • Create a moodboard for my T.A.
Reflections:

I used a website called niice to create a moodboard with GIF's and images that represent my target audience. This will help to build my visual idea of my target audience and to see them as a complete person rather than as a series of unrelated traits.

27/06/17

Aims:
  • Choose magazines that inspire me
Reflection:
I created an emaze photo album with magazine contents pages, front covers, and articles which I liked that I could refer back to for inspiration. This will inspire me when I am low on ideas and need to look at professional products to see how to make my own product realistic.

Product Inspirations: Magazine Inspirations

These are the magazines which will inspire me and that I will base my work off. Having these all in one place allows me to examine common themes and helps me to build up my own ideas. I need inspiration to base my ideas off to ensure that I obey conventions to the best of my ability.
The national magazines front covers inspire me due to their use of color and layout. They use bright colors to draw in attention and the layouts make the page seem more full. As well as this, the poses are interesting and the images look very professional.
The layout of the contents pages are also interesting, especially the image placement. They are all very unique and this means that I can play around and experiment with the images I use. The articles also use images very well, especially color within the images. They also have a good text to image ratio which meet the visual needs of a magazine such as this.
Finally, the regional magazine inspirations show me what I need to do to qualify as a regional magazine and how to appeal to a regional audience. I can learn a great deal from these sorts of magazines.

22/06/17

Aims:

  • Look at specific fonts
Reflection:
I made an emaze presentation in which I looked at fonts that I had found on DaFont and explored why they may or may not suit my needs. I then pitted them against each other and scored them to see which was the most suitable. I feel that this presentation was incredibly detailed and that I have truly chosen the best possible fonts for this project.

Font Inspirations: Potential Fonts

In this emaze presentation, I looked through the website DaFont. DaFont is a website with a range of free fonts that differ from the default fonts. Creators may choose to use non-default fonts to make their magazine seem more original or to make it stand out. They may also be more suited to the theme of the magazine. In this presentation, I will look at the fonts I have found and evaluate which is the best for its purpose. The key things I'm looking for in these fonts are:
 - Aesthetics
 - Formality
 - Obeys conventions
 - Originality

The fonts that I liked best were:

  • Wonderland (Masthead)
  • Big Noodle Tilting (Sell line)
  • Caviar Dreams (Sell Line)
  • Heaven Matters (Contents Title)
  • Beauty And The Beast (Article Title)
  • Pistilli Roman (General Serif Font)
  • Brixton (General Serif Font)
  • Arial (General Sans Serif Font)
  • Muro (General Sans Serif Font)
  • Multicolore(General Sans Serif Font)

21/06/17

Aims:

  • Collect survey findings and examine them
Reflection:
I took screenshots of the graphs available on SurveyPlanet with my complete results. I examined the results and saw the patterns and what type of person I could expect to purchase my magazine. Looking at these results, I saw that my target audience would consist of 26-30 year old upper class women. I also learnt about which websites to use for my social media links.

T.A Research: Survey Findings

In the last week, I created a survey (as detailed in this [x] post) and recently I collected the results. Here are the initial results detailing everyone that I surveyed. These have been included in the post so that it is clear that this was a fair survey and I surveyed people from all backgrounds.
This shows that I surveyed people from a range of different age groups. I did my best to survey at least one person from each group. I had easier access to under 18 - 26 yr olds as they are around my age group and therefore I am more likely to be friends with these groups. I then surveyed an equal amount of people from these groups for the sake of fairness. This should tell me the age of my target audience. This is useful, as I said before, for adapting the language usage, image-to-text ratio, article choice, and the levels of formality in my magazine.

I surveyed an equal number of men and women so that I could safely say that more women than men would be likely to read the magazine. Despite this being an obvious assumption, I wanted to receive proof and see just how dramatic the gender split was. I assume that I'll have a small male readership. This will help inspire me with colour themes and article choice as well as a range of other things.

This was not something that I could get an even split with as the people I know did not necessarily fit into these categories evenly. I did my best to get a similar amount of single, taken, and engaged people and, indeed, the numbers are close. However, if I did this survey on a wider scale, I would have liked to have had more married participants. The results of this will give me insight into what sort of articles I should include.

Once more, I did my best to get people from all social classes. I do know people from a range of backgrounds so this was not overly difficult. The numbers are not perfect but, as the graph represents - this was a relatively fair split. This tells me whether or not I should focus on luxury products or cheaper products.
This is closely linked to the question that follows.
This tells me about the personal lives of my readership and gives me insight into this such as how much free time they have, how much disposable income they have, and gives me stereotypes about their interests and personalities. This would affect the articles I would choose to run and the language used throughout.

This question exists to prove that all of my respondents were from my target area of the North East and that I only surveyed people who were regionally relevant to me.

This was another question where it became difficult to get an even mix as, clearly, the people I know would be situated closer to me. What I did do was ensure that I surveyed people from across the area - though this was incredibly difficult to do. If I were to do this survey again, I would have liked to have done it on a wider scale and been able to survey more people from each area.

This question allowed to give me insight into my readerships views on marriage and see if there was anyone reading it who was unsure about marriage or if everyone was certain in their views. People who are certain about what they want tend to be easier to sell products to but I could adapt articles specifically to those who are unsure if they made up a large portion of my audience.

This question is related to the question below.

These two questions were very relevant to my viral marketing campaign. It tells me which social media platforms are the most used and the most well-known. With the proliferation of technology, brands need an online presence to stay relevant and this can be achieved through creating a social media presence. This tells me which social medias I should put in my magazines contents page and on the footer and my website. The most popular were clearly Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram but I will also check if these are the most popular with my T.A.

I received 17 relevant results. If I could do this survey on a wider scale, I would. These 17 people make up my target audience and these would be the people I would try to appeal to. I will remove the 21 people who would not be interested in a regional bridal magazine and re-review my results.

The age range that was the most interested in my magazine was 26-30 year olds. People in their late twenties are no longer 'young' adults but they are not quite middle-aged yet. This means that they have a sense of maturity but not so much that the magazine will have to be uniform and overly formal. I should ensure that my magazine does have formal tones but I can still stray from uniformity in places. My language usage should be serious for the most part but informal first-person may be used. Articles should focus on people in this age group and my model should be someone from this age group. Women (see below) from this group are stereotypically either interested in child-rearing or they are too focused on their career. This may factor into my article choice.
This confirms what I already expected - women make up a vast majority. This may mean that I include more pinks in my color scheme. It means that my model should be female. My articles should be targeted towards females. My language choice should be more feminine. I may also include some articles on the website for the male audience as they do exist in a very small percentage.

The majority of my audience is engaged and in the process of planning their wedding. This will, again, affect my article choice as they will focus on the lead-up to getting married. This means that my articles can focus on this planning process. The others I can assume are hopeful that they will find someone and they will propose.

70.6% of my audience belongs to the ABC1 social class. This means that my T.A have a large income and would be more likely to be interested in luxury products and luxury weddings. They may look in these sort of magazines or on the website to try and find products to purchase or a location to look into and therefore I must adapt in order to meet this demand. This also may affect how much I sell my magazine more as richer people can afford more expensive magazines.

I have a small percentage of student readers but the majority are not in education. However, there is a 29.4% percentage of my audience who are students. I could tailor some of the articles to students and have some about balancing student debt or balancing education with married life ect. However, the majority of my audience are not students and therefore I can assume that they are employed (as only 2 people are unemployed as seen below.)
The majority of my audience is in full time employment. 88.2% are in overall employment. This shows me that my audience is independent and hard-working and that they have a reliable source of income. Those in full time work may have less free time but 47.1% have a large amount of free time.

This question links to the question below.

This does not show any particular pattern or any congregation of readers in one specific area. I have a potential audience across the North East. My highest percentage came from Newcastle with 23.5% of relevant respondents hailing from there. However, I will try to appeal to the region as a whole.
This tells me that majority of my audience are certain about what they want and have already considered it. This means that they have preconceived notions about what they want some a wedding. There is also a very small portion of readers who are unsure what they want but may be susceptible to persuasion. This tells me I can, for the most part, assume my readership wants to be married as I assumed as they are reading a bridal magazine.

This links to the question below.
This makes it clear that my target audience primarily uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. These are easily the most popular and the ones I should consider putting on the footer on my website and on my contents page for my viral marketing campaign.

I will make a follow-up post detailing what I learnt about my T.A in one infographic at a later date and I will use this to adapt my magazine to suit my potential buyers.

20/06/17

Aims:

  • Look at other magazines fonts
Reflection:
I have created a Prezi that examines the fonts used in similar magazines. I have also correlated what I have learnt into five Venn Diagrams. These helped me look at my information more clearly and see what sort of fonts must be used for each section. Following this, I will look at fonts more specifically and choose which one I believe is best.

Font Inspiration: Other Magazines

Above is a Prezi presentation on fonts across various similar magazines. I looked at magazine fronts covers, contents pages, articles, billboards, and websites. I have correlated my findings across these Venn Diagrams:

This has influenced several decisions on my magazine:

I will definitely:

  1. Use a serif masthead
  2. Use a thin sans serif font for some sell lines
  3. Use a sans serif font for contents list
  4.  Use a script font for article titles
  5. Use a narrow sans serif font for article text
  6. Write additional information on my billboard in a sans serif font
  7. Write online articles in a sans serif font.
I will probably:
  1. Use a thick sans serif font for some sell lines
  2. Use a serif font for a limited amount of sell lines
  3. Use a serif font for page numbers
  4. Use a script font for the contents page title
  5. Write my title in a serif font for my billboard

17/06/17

Aims:

  • Look at audience opinion on magazine name [Not In Initial Plan]
Reflection:
I  created a survey and sent it around my immediate friend group. As I got quick responses, I decided not to leave it over night and to collect the results immediately. What I learnt from this is that people responded the most positively to the title of MATRIMONY. This has heavily swayed my decision. I already thought that this title was a strong contender so it is exceedingly likely that I will use that.

Masthead Ideas: Audience Feedback

To help me decide which of the three names I had decided upon in this post [x] was the best and would resonate most strongly with my target audience, I used a website called Straw Poll. This website allowed me to create a poll with several options and then email/text it out to people around me and see which title they thought was most appropriate and strongest.

I put in the three options and included Duplication Checking to stop people from selecting a response more than once. This ensured that the poll was fair and I got true results. I then created the poll and waited to see what response I would get over the course of a day.

Above, you can see the results I received in two different formats. Both show the overwhelming lead from MATRIMONY with 13 voters favouring that name over the other two. This tells me that this title is the most effective to use as it would resonate the most strongly with an audience and it stands out the most. MATRIMONY was already a strong title in my opinion as I listed it as: feminine, luxurious, stand-out, unique, and sophisticated.

15/06/17

Aims:

  • Evaluate and choose a name
Reflection:
I created a mindmap to write down the ideas that I'd had for names, each one fitting into the categories I'd established. From there, I examined and evaluated each one to see which I thought was the best. This allowed me to see the pros and cons of each name and encouraged me to really think about my decision. I will also create a survey at a later date and see what my audience thinks is the most suitable name.

Masthead Ideas: Name Evaluation

In this Powtoon, I look at each of the names from the minmap I made earlier in the post that can be viewed here [x] individually. I evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and why they would or would not be suitable. At the end of this, I chose the top three and I will put them up for a vote. Therefore, the audience can choose the most effective name and the magazine that they would be most interested in reading/most likely to purchase.

Masthead Inspiration: Name Ideas

These are the names that I have brainstormed. I will evaluate them individually in a later post. This mindmap allows me to express my ideas in a way in which I can easily return to and expand upon. These ideas are based off the categories I acknowledged in a previous post on this blog which can be viewed here [x]. I feel that each of these names are strong in their own way and should be taken into account when evaluating. The names that I am currently favoring are: Matrimony, North Easts Weddings, and This Wedding.

14/06/17

Aims:
  • Create survey for T.A
Reflections: I created my survey to learn the key things about my target audience on SurveyPlanet. The way I did this was by asking questions about the survey taker such as age and gender and then, at the end, asking if they would be interested in a regional bridal magazine. Once I have collected enough results, I will delete the responses that say "no" and would not be interested and then only have the results of those who would be. I can then examine what shared qualities they have and see which age group, which gender ect. would be most interested and cater to them.

The first question focuses on age group. I tried to narrow down the categories so that there is only a 5 year gap between each, excluding the first two. This question will give me results as to which age group I should tailor my magazine too. I am expecting the results to show that older people are more interested. I am specifically expecting the 20-25 and 26-30 categories to be interested in a bridal magazine. This will be something to consider when I'm looking at the complexity of language I choose and the length of articles. It will also adjust the maturity of the pages.

Secondly, I looked at gender. I am aiming to get an even split of men and women taking this survey so that I can accurately measure which gender would be most interested. I am expecting this question to greatly favour women as I cannot see many men being interested in this genre. This will affect colour choice and language choice.

This question interests me greatly. I expect that the majority of readers will be engaged though it will be interesting to see how many are not. I may have an audience who is single and dreaming, single wedding planners may look at magazines like this. I may have an audience of people in a relationship who are hoping to be proposed to or are thinking of proposing. This will be something to consider when choosing what sort of articles to include.

This question came with a warning as I did not want to offend survey takers. I expect some people will skip this question. I expect that many people who are interested in bridal magazines will belong to a higher social group although I am not confident in this belief. It may be an even split. The results of this question will affect the contents of the magazine and how much I focus on luxury weddings. If my audience is particularly rich, I will focus on selling them high end products but if they are poorer then I will not.
This is closely linked to the question that follows it.

These tell me about the personal lives of my readers. It tells me how much disposable income they are likely to have and, importantly, tells me how much free time they will have. This will affect my article choices and would, if this were a real magazine, affect the advertisements that I would run.

This question exists to ensure that all of my respondents are from the area as this magazine is only aiming to appeal to North East citizens. I should not receive any feedback from users outside of the North East as I am only sending this survey to people I know and therefore it is controlled. However, I will remove any responses from those outside of the North East.
This question features a drop down menu that allows the user to select their home. This means that I can include sell lines regarding specific areas and see where a bridal magazine would be most popular. If all respondents from Huddersfield claimed to be interested in a bridal magazine, then it may be wise to include articles specific to Huddersfield. This question may not be 100% accurate as most respondents will be from Durham or Sunderland as that is the majority of people I know.
This question allows me to explore my readers individual views surrounding marriage. I am expecting them to be certain that they want to be married but I would like to see if there is a portion of my audience who is still unsure and looking for persuasion. This would affect my article choice greatly.

These two questions will affect my viral marketing and which social media sites I will reference and advertise on my webpage or in my magazine. I will only reference the most popular of the results. This also tells me a little about the type of person reading my magazine. Regular Instagram users tend to be vain. Those who have used MySpace will be more familiar with technology as they will have been on the internet for a long time.

This is the final question, used to weed out those who are not relevant and see who my target audience is. This survey is quite simple and tells me how to tailor my magazine to the right people.
I will check back next week and examine my results.

13/06/17

Aims:

  • Look at other magazines mastheads
Reflection:
Today I created an emaze photo album to look at other magazines mastheads. I saved some front covers and looked through them to examine the masthead and see if I could take inspiration or see any patterns. I did observe one continuing pattern. This was that all of the magazine names tended to be either _ Brides, _ Wedding, Region specific, or they were a word/phrase associated with marriage. This covered every example I found. From here, I will mind map my ideas for potential names that fit into these categories.

Masthead Inspiration: Other magazine names

I looked at similar magazines and their names. Between them, I seemed to be able to sort them into four distinct categories. These categories included region specific names, names that were followed by the word Bride or Wedding and singular word titles that were related to weddings. This means that my magazines name should fit into one of these categories. I will create a mind-map to brainstorm ideas within these categories. Looking at this ensures that I will meet conventions and my title will be similar to others in my genre. Click on the smaller arrows at the side of the images to see more magazines.

08/06/17

Aims:

  • Create initial moodboard
Reflection:
I have created my initial moodboard using the site GoMoodboard. It is free and easy to use. It allowed me to create a starting point for my ideas and this will help me create a focused product. It also shows anyone looking over my work that I had thought about what I was doing and that there was careful planning ahead of making my final product.

Overall Inspiration: Initial Moodboard

Link to [MOODBOARD]

Image Version:

Above is a moodboard with images from magazines and of brides and various bridal objects. This acts as inspiration for the products that I will create an outlines my initial ideas when starting this project. I will base my photos off the images I have observed here and refer back to this for focus. If you follow the link above the image, specific images can be hovered over and there I explain why each image has been chosen and what it represents. This also clearly outlines my ideas and gives me a starting point to further these ideas.

Calendar For June

Here is my time management plan for the month of June. I have tried to space out my work well but also ensure fast progress by expecting myself to complete three tasks a week. I feel that this plan should work and that I should have time to set out everything I plan to do.

Tuesday, 6 June 2017

06/ 06/17

Aims:
  • Create blog
  • Write out welcome post
  • Write out brief
Reflection:
I have created my blog and chose a theme that I believe it appropriate and professional looking. I have enabled the widget that allows the labels used on posts to be visible, therefore making it possible to navigate the blog by looking through posts tagged with a certain label. This means that I can look at posts specifically tagged as inspiration or posts tagged as potential target audience. This makes my blog neater and more organised. I have also written out my welcome post and my brief. The welcome post creates a clear beginning on this blog and the brief outlines my goals. I have made a good start and I intend to keep up progress.

Brief

The first four pages from an original regional magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style), together with two of the following three option:

  • a radio advertisement for the magazine.
  • two hyperlinked pages from the magazines website.
  • a billboard advertisement for the magazine.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my A2 media coursework blog!
